It’s tempting to fill your brand-new, or brand-new to YOU RV with every gadget, gizmo, and “must-have” accessory you come across. But let’s face it—space is limited, and there’s no need to overcomplicate things.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or living life full-time in your RV, here are the essential accessories you actually need to make your adventures smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.

After living in an RV full-time for two whole years, we realized the things you ACTUALLY needed VS. just another temping gadget to help make every single aspect of RV life easier. As you probably already know, there’s something for EVERYTHING.

Listed below, we’ve compiled the top 10 things you actually need for your RV whether you’re hitting the road for the first time, or a seasoned expert. These 10 things will be your foundation every time.

Top 10 RV Accessories You Actually Need

1. Water Pressure Regulator. An often-overlooked accessory, a water pressure regulator is a small investment that can save you from a major headache. Campgrounds and RV parks can have inconsistent water pressure, which could damage your RV’s plumbing. A regulator keeps the pressure in check, ensuring that your water flows properly without harming your pipes. Why You Need It: Protects your RV’s plumbing system from bursts or leaks caused by high water pressure.

2. Surge Protector. Your RV’s electrical system is a critical component, and protecting it should be a top priority. Power surges are more common than you might think, especially in campgrounds where many RVs are pulling from the same electrical grid. A good surge protector will prevent damage to your RV’s electronics and wiring. Why You Need It: Prevents costly damage from unpredictable power surges.

3. Leveling Blocks. Not every campsite is perfectly flat, and sleeping on an angle is no fun. Leveling blocks allow you to adjust your RV’s position so that you’re comfortable and stable. They’re easy to stack and adjust, and they’ll keep your appliances running smoothly too—fridges and stoves, in particular, operate best when level. Why You Need It: Ensures comfort, safety, and proper function of your RV’s appliances.

We unfortunately had to use those awful, cheap, yellow plastic ones during our time on the road, but let us save you some trouble and recommend RV SnapPad. They are an easy, permanent installation on your rig, without any hassle.

Even though, yes, the yellow ones are easy to stack. And yes, they do get the job done and yes, we used them for two whole years. But you don’t have to be us! We would advise against that in the nicest way possible.

4. Sewer Hose Kit. Dealing with your RV’s waste system isn’t glamorous, but it’s a necessary part of RV life. A high-quality sewer hose kit, complete with all the fittings and attachments, will make dumping your tanks more sanitary and less stressful. Look for one that’s durable and easy to store. Why You Need It: Efficient, sanitary waste management is key to a pleasant RV experience.

It’s not as dirty of a job as some may make it seem, but having the right sewer hose kit with good fittings, does make a big difference in this thankless job.

Having the clear connector fittings is the best option in order to ensure proper black tank function.

5. Portable Air Compressor. Flat tires or low air pressure can ruin a trip fast. A portable air compressor allows you to maintain proper tire pressure on the go, ensuring you stay safe and your RV’s fuel efficiency stays optimal. It’s also handy for bikes, inflatable kayaks, or anything else you might need to pump up while adventuring. Why you need it: It keeps you safe & resourceful in unexpected emergencies.

We were those RV newbies out on the road WITHOUT one of these for far too long. All it takes is one day on the side of the road to realize that THIS is an absolute RV necessity.

6. RV-Friendly GPS. Navigating narrow streets or low-clearance bridges can be tricky when you’re driving a large rig. An RV-friendly GPS will take into account the size and weight of your RV, helping you avoid routes that aren’t suitable. This accessory might seem unnecessary if you rely on your phone, but cell service is spotty in some remote areas, and an RV-specific GPS is designed with your rig in mind. Why You Need It: Helps you avoid unsuitable routes and keeps you on the safest, most efficient path.

We initially used different apps with RV GPS features HOWEVER, we found that they weren’t very accurate or reliable. It would definitely be beneficial to purchase an actual RV-friendly GPS system.

7. Camping Mat or Outdoor Rug. Your RV is a small space, and keeping the dirt and grime from your campsite outside is a constant battle. A durable camping mat or outdoor rug placed at your entryway gives you a clean spot to leave your shoes, minimizing the dirt tracked inside. Many are easy to clean and fold up for storage. Why You Need It: Keeps your RV cleaner and more comfortable inside.

This may not be an ACTUAL necessity, but it does make a big difference when you really are just jet-setting all over the country in just your RV. So we’ll call this an RV accessory you kinda need but will most likely really want.

Can’t forget about the cozy touches, ya know?

8. Water Hose. In order to connect to an external water source and have water in your RV for drinking water, washing dishes, flushing toilets, taking showers, and even washing laundry, a water hose is an essential piece of the RV set-up. This hose is specifically designed for potable water, ensuring safety and cleanliness.

Which is why we are pairing this necessity with a water filter as well. Sometimes you can’t always trust your water source to be completely potable, even though they advertise it that way.

Just take that extra step to protect yourself and make sure you have a water filter to attach to your water hose for the cleanest water possible entering your RV for cooking, drinking, and bathing.

It is a little pricey, but the best water filter we’ve found.

9. Collapsible Kitchen Tools. Space is at a premium in an RV, especially in the kitchen. Collapsible bowls, colanders, and dish racks are lifesavers, giving you the tools you need to cook while taking up minimal space when not in use. Look for durable, easy-to-clean options made from silicone or other lightweight materials. Why You Need It: Maximizes kitchen space and reduces clutter.

This was something we actually did prepare for from the get-go, and we’re glad we did! There’s never enough room in any RV kitchen, but being able to prepare the things you love, needs to remain a priority.

Collapsable kitchen tools are one of the greatest inventions of all time.

10. Solar Panels or Portable Power Station. Whether you’re boondocking or simply trying to reduce your dependence on campground hookups, a solar panel system or portable power station is a smart investment. It allows you to generate power while off-grid, keeping your essentials like lights, fans, and refrigerators running without draining your RV’s battery. Why You Need It: Provides a reliable power source when you’re off-grid.

Even though this is the last item listed, we would probably say that this is necessity NUMERO UNO!! Don’t skip or skimp on this RV accessory. This is what will set you a part from the rest. This will allow you to be capable no matter the circumstance or what life out on the road throws at you.

Always make sure you have your own power source. Always.

A Few Honorable Mentions; RV Accessories & the Weather

If you’re staying in colder weather, a heated water hose is definitely a must have RV accessory. A frozen pipe is one thing, but a busted pipe is a whole other nightmare you don’t want to experience as an RVer.

If you’re staying in warmer, humid climates, a good De-humidifier on hand is essential to keeping your RV mold free! Humid is an enemy ESPECIALLY in an RV. The more dry you can keep your RV, the longer it’s going to last! Inside AND out!

And whether you’re in hot OR cold weather, installing insulation film on your RV windows can help keep heat in or out, depending on what you’re needing in your current climate and element. You can check out a great option HERE.
